On Santa Fe Avenue, Lincoln Park is a neighborhood and public park that is near to downtown Denver, Colorado, as well as the location of the Art District. A historic neighborhood in Denver, it is located just south of where Denver’s earliest settlement took place in 1850s, making it one of the city’s oldest neighborhoods. Many of the homes were built around 1900. The neighborhood is referred to as “La Alma/Lincoln Park” or the “West Side” by certain residents.
A number of important institutions are located in the neighborhood, including the Museo de las Americas on Santa Fe Drive, which was the region’s first museum dedicated to the art and culture of Latinos; the Center for Visual Art, which serves as a contemporary art gallery and learning lab for Metropolitan State University of Denver; Denver Health hospital complex; Denver West High School; and the Asian and Hispanic Chambers of Commerce. A old courtroom and district attorney’s office located at the crossroads of Speer Boulevard and Colfax Avenue has been transformed into a Latino cultural and business center, according to the city. A studio at 7th and Kalamath was established by the venerable Boulder, Colorado-based community radio station KGNU in 2006, when they began airing on 1390 AM in Denver, where they were housed alongside noncommercial media partner, Open Media Foundation.
The Denver Civic Theater, located on Santa Fe Drive, first opened its doors as a cinema house in 1921, making it one of the city’s first silent film cinemas. The facility was then utilized for a variety of uses (such as a meatpacking plant) until being rebuilt and opened as a local arts center in 1993. It contains two theaters (one with 332 seats and another with 134) as well as a gallery of contemporary art. It has been utilized for theatrical plays by local writers and a resident performing group since its inception in 2000, and it was named the new home of El Centro Su Teatro in 2010.
Lincoln Park itself is located within the neighborhood, at the intersection of Mariposa St. and West 11th Avenue. An outdoor pool and leisure center are located within the park. There is also a softball field with a grass infield and lighting as well as tennis courts and sand volleyball courts available. The Denver Inner City Parish, located across the street from the park, is a grassroots, human services non-profit organization that has been providing community services to area residents since 1960. These services include a food pantry, basic necessities, seniors programming, and La Academia, their school for at-risk youth.
