Denver’s Acid Stain Concrete Experts

Acid stained concrete is one of the most visually striking finishes available — and it’s permanently bonded into the concrete itself, not just sitting on top. At Denver Stamped Concrete Co., voted Denver’s best concrete contractor five years in a row, we apply acid stains to patios, driveways, pool decks, garage floors, and interior surfaces throughout the Denver metro.

The result is a rich, mottled, multi-toned finish that looks like aged leather, natural stone, or weathered marble — and every surface is completely unique because no two concrete slabs react to acid stain exactly the same way.

What Is Acid Staining?

Acid staining is a chemical process, not a paint or coating. A water-based solution containing hydrochloric acid and metallic salts is applied to the concrete surface. The acid opens the pores of the concrete and the metallic salts react with the lime content inside, creating a permanent chemical bond that produces rich, translucent color.

Because the stain reacts with the actual chemistry of the concrete — which varies throughout any slab — the result has natural variation, depth, and character that can’t be replicated with paint or dye. It won’t peel, chip, or fade the way topical coatings can.

We also offer water-based concrete dyes for homeowners who want a wider range of colors beyond the earthy tones that acid staining produces.

Acid Stain Color Options

Acid stains produce rich, earthy tones that occur naturally from the chemical reaction. Available colors include:

Golden Wheat
Coffee Brown
Terra Cotta
Forest Green
Slate Blue
Desert Sand
Charcoal
Tuscan Red

Note: Actual stain colors vary based on the concrete’s age, composition, and surface condition — which is what gives each project its unique character. We can provide samples before starting your project.

Where We Apply Acid Stain in Denver

Patios & Outdoor Surfaces

Acid stain adds warmth and character to outdoor concrete. Combined with a quality UV-resistant sealer, it holds up beautifully through Colorado’s seasons.

Pool Decks

Earthy stain tones complement any pool landscaping and look stunning when wet. We apply a slip-resistant, pool-rated sealer over all pool deck stain work.

Driveways

A stained driveway stands out from every other house on the block. The natural variation of acid stain actually helps camouflage minor tire marks over time.

Interior Floors

Basement floors, living areas, kitchens — acid stained concrete indoors creates a warm, sophisticated aesthetic that’s impossible to replicate with other flooring.

Garage Floors

A stained and sealed garage floor is far more resistant to tire marks, oil, and chemical staining than bare concrete.

Porches & Walkways

Tie together your home’s exterior with a coordinated stain color across your porch, steps, and walkways.

Our Acid Staining Process

  1. Surface Preparation The concrete is thoroughly cleaned, degreased, and any existing coatings are removed. The surface must be bare for the stain to react properly.
  2. Masking & Protection We protect adjacent surfaces, walls, and landscaping before application begins.
  3. Acid Stain Application The stain is carefully applied and worked into the surface. We use professional techniques to create natural variation and depth.
  4. Neutralization After the reaction is complete, the surface is neutralized with a baking soda solution and thoroughly rinsed.
  5. Residue Removal We scrub and remove all stain residue to reveal the true color beneath.
  6. Sealing A quality sealer appropriate for the application (interior vs. outdoor, pool vs. driveway) is applied to lock in the color and protect the surface.

Frequently Asked Questions About Acid Stained Concrete

Is acid stain permanent?

Yes. Because the color is created by a chemical reaction within the concrete itself — not a coating sitting on top — it cannot peel, chip, or fade the way paint does. The sealer on top will need periodic re-application, but the stain color itself is permanent.

Can acid staining be done on existing concrete?

Yes, as long as the surface is free of paint, sealers, or other coatings that would prevent the acid from reaching the concrete. Old concrete can actually produce more interesting results than new concrete because it has more variation and character built up over time.

What’s the difference between acid stain and water-based concrete dye?

Acid stain reacts chemically with the concrete and is limited to earthy, natural tones. Water-based dyes penetrate the concrete without a chemical reaction and are available in a much wider range of colors including blues, reds, and greens. Acid stain typically produces more natural variation; dyes produce more uniform, controllable color. We offer both.

How do I maintain acid stained concrete?

Sweep and damp mop regularly. Use pH-neutral cleaners only — avoid vinegar, bleach, or citrus-based cleaners which can damage the sealer. Re-apply sealer every 2–3 years outdoors or as needed indoors based on wear. That’s all it takes.

Will the stain look exactly like the color samples?

Acid stain interacts differently with every concrete slab depending on its age, mix, and surface condition — so there’s always natural variation. This is actually what makes it beautiful, but it means results can’t be guaranteed to match a sample exactly. We always recommend viewing completed project photos and, where possible, testing a small inconspicuous area first.
